A WebQuest for 3rd Grade Music Designed by Tracy O’Shea toshea@colonialsd.org
Introduction | Task | Process | Evaluation | Conclusion | Credits You have been hired as the
new conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Your first performance
will be Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf”. Unfortunately, there is a
big problem. The entire Woodwind Section is on vacation and they can
not get back in time for the performance. Your job is to figure out
what parts need to be covered and then hire some new musicians to fill the
job. You will also need to introduce these new players, their instruments,
and share some interesting facts about them to the audience. The Woodwind
players are very grateful that you are covering their parts. In appreciation
they are going to write a piece of music about you when they get back.
They will need you to share a short story about yourself and they will also
need you to pick what instrument of the orchestra best describes you. Good
luck on your new job!
1. First you will be assigned to a group of 4 students. 2. Each person will choose one character from the story to investigate. (bird, duck, cat, or grandfather)
3. Investigate what instrument is needed for your character in story. Peter and the Wolf Website Character and Story Listening Examples Read the Story and Meet the Characters Watch a Short Clip from the Cartoon Movie 4. Each person will need to hire one musician from the New York Philharmonic to cover their assigned instrument. The musicians tend to hang out in the Musician’s Lounge. New York Philharmonic 5. Each group member will need
to create a “Meet ________”
page on Kidspiration to introduce the musician that they have researched. If you are unsure about the features of Kidspiration refer to the Kidspiration Tutorial as you are working. Be sure to include lots of interesting details about the musicians. For example, what instrument they play, what character they represent in the story, and details about their personal lives as well! Don't forget to use clip-art to enhance your picture! New York Philharmonic 6. After each member of the group as finished their individual page, you will then create one more page together. This page will represent all four woodwind players and will illustrate their similarities as well as their differences. Try to point out the interesting qualities they have in common! Similarites do not need to include all 4 players. There may be only two or three that share a certain characteristic or interest. You should share at least four similarities and four differences in your picture. Remember, clip-art will enhance your overall picture. 7. As a token of their appreciation, the woodwind players on vacation would like to write a song for you! They would like you to create a short story about yourself and three friends. (This will be your group) Your short story will be written as a group in MaxWrite. (only one person needs to type) As a group you will decide to make it fiction or non-fiction. Each character needs to have a short but necessary part in the story. The story should be 1-2 pages. 8. After your story is completed you will need to research what instrument you feel would best represent each character in your new story. Listen to many instrument examples before you make your decision. Your choice can be from any family of instruments, you are not restricted to the woodwind family. Dallas Symphony Orchestra New York Philharmonic San Francisco Symphony 9. The woodwind players on vacation are also
requesting a
picture of all four characters. You will need to do this on KidPix. Be sure to include a drawing of yourself, your name, and the instrument that will be your voice in the story/song. Each group member will do their own separate picture. For a quick review of the different tools available in KidPix, click on KidPix Review. 10. Your group will be introducing the new
musicians as well
as reading your new story to the class. We will try to guess what instrument you have chosen to represent yourself in the new story. Finally, you will show us your picture and the instrument you have chosen. 11. When you are finished you should have:
Each student will be graded
individually for their "Meet the Musician" page in Kidspiration and for their
own picture on KidPix. Students will be graded as a group for their
picture in Kidspiration that compares and contrasts the different musicians,
and also for their story written in Max Write.
